A family brutally slaughtered. A daughter disappeared into thin air...

Still recovering from the murder attempt that nearly took her life, tough-as-nails New York homicide detective Jasmine Steele is slowly coming to grips with a world that's seemingly gone mad. She has every reason to fear death her parents are both long gone, and she watched her brother bleed out following a drunk driving accident that left his wife dead and his son an orphan. Now Chase lives with his Aunt Jasmine--Jazz for short--and life was readjusting for them both until a serial killer gunning for Jazz almost resulted in the murders of both Chase and Jazz's longtime actress friend Hadley. And there are still loose ends she’s desperate to tie up…

Jazz's bleary obsession with her past is interrupted when she's assigned to a horrifying case the entire Johnson family's been viciously murdered. Hard-boiled alert  author Kimberly Amato pulls no punches. The mother's throat was slit while trying to call for help and the father was shot in the chest, then gruesomely sliced up while still alive, like a scene from a horror film. Also found, the body of their young son, about Chase's age, left in the closet with a snapped neck. When ever-adept Jazz finds a business card in the father's wallet reading "Garrison Developments," she's suddenly on high alert. This is a link to her horrendous losses.

But it's the remaining clues to a missing fourth victim--a teenage daughter named Kaley--that leave her reeling.

Kaley's seemingly disappeared without a trace. But something about the crime scene just doesn't seem right... Looking to psychologist Frankie for help (her own life partner and Kaley's child psychologist), Jazz discovers that the Johnson family had plenty of disturbing skeletons in its closet. Skeletons possibly warranting hiring a hit man on the Internet. And then there's that business card. And that photo of, the Garrison clan patriarch shaking hands with the principal of Kaley's private school--a school that couldn't seem to care less whether Kaley is dead or alive.

With the help of trusted coroner and best pal Victor, as well as her new partner, Detective Will Everts (a father of daughters who's about to learn more about the teenage girl psyche than he'd like to), ever-fearless Jazz jumps head-first into the opaque abyss of corrupt New York finance and down the dangerous and secretive rabbit hole of the Deep Web. Can she manage to trace a cold-blooded killer, using only the most untraceable technology known to man?

This one’s for fans of hard-boiled police procedurals, lesbian mysteries, and badass female sleuths. Definitely not for the squeamish! But those who can't get enough of the exciting new wave of hard-boiled women sleuths, created by writers like Megan Abbott, Laura Lippmann, Lisa Lutz, and Vicki Hendricks will be attracted to the author’s take-no-prisoners style, and her unflinching attention to harrowing detail.

Yet lovers of traditional mysteries will appreciate the web of fierce loyalty tempered with fearful caution that links Jazz’s tiny but hardy support system—Victor, Frankie, Will, and their actress friend Hadley, not to mention Chase himself. Somehow or other, Amato manages to mix all the excitement of an action thriller with the swirling emotions of a mainstream psychological novel.

Melting Steele The Jasmine Steele Mystery Series Book 2 edition by Kimberly Amato Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Kimberly Amato is no One Hit Wonder

Melting Steele gives the readers a crash course or a simplified view of the dark side of the age of information. Months after the events of Steele Resolve, Jasmine is once again called on to investigate a very brutal and sadistic homicide that will make the reader at times feels squeemish. especially if the reader has a children. But it is all part of the motivating drive that gives Steele the passion and resolve to pursue this case to the end, even if it plays with her obsession against her antagonist.

I was very pleased that events in the first book are not forgotten, it is almost shocking to read how Jasmine handles and deals with the aftermath after the events of Steele Resolve. But these nostalgia come and go as the here and now in Melting Steele as you begin to discover that not all murder scenes are as black and white, with the exception of a murdered 8 year old perhaps.

All and all when reading this i felt like I was reading a modern and Americanized version of Gorky's Park! Very anxious to read the conclusion of the Trilogy

Melting Steele The Jasmine Steele Mystery Series Book 2 edition by Kimberly Amato Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Melting Steele is a crime novel with a detective woman as the main character. Different from many novels that include a female detective, Melting Steele introduces Jasmine Steele as a human being primarily, rather than just a femme fatale full of sexual tension. A human being that has feelings and obsessions, a woman that has lost a loved one to the hands of a killer and now struggles to stay focused and not let those feelings lead her to the wrong path.

With a highly realistic touch, the novel involves crimes that have its roots on the net, a dangerous place where everything you say, write, and do, can be seen by everyone and once it's done, it cannot be undone.

Rather than a plot focused on a female detective's romantic problems, the novel follows Steele's painful past which chases her every single day, and her need for revenge together with the case she needs to solve. Although this is the second of a series, it can be perfectly read without reading the first part before. This is something admirable because it isn't something easy to do. Most novels in a series cannot be read if you haven't read the previous one.

I would recommend this reading to those mystery readers who enjoy a fast-paced novel.
“Melting Steele” by Kimberly Amato is an engaging and suspenseful mystery read! This book follows the author’s previous book “Steele Resolve” and features the same protagonist Detective Jasmine Steele. The plot revolves around a series of murders all tied to technology. Detective Steele must use her wits, skills and professional connections to stay one step ahead of danger and solve the mystery before it’s too late. It takes all her willpower though to remain true to her professional mission (and minimize her personal vendettas) when information starts to point back to the person who killed her brother.

I thought “Melting Steele” was a very suspenseful and engaging book. Detective Steele is such a likeable heroine; she’s strong, sassy, determined and always finishes what she starts. The author does an exceptional job keeping the mystery, suspense and tense atmosphere going throughout the entire book. I can’t wait to see what the author has Detective Steele doing next! I would recommend this book to fans of mystery, suspense, thriller and crime fiction genres.
First and foremost I love this book because it's a crime novel/detective story with a lead female that isn't full of sexual tension. Most books that have female detectives have one of their biggest problems be her attraction to someone off-limits for any number of reasons. Jasmine Steele doesn't have that problem. The plot isn't driven by her romantic urges instead it's driven by her past, her longing for revenge, and the current case she's working on. I think it makes the book much more relatable than the other way around.

Though this book is the second in the series I read it as a stand alone, because it just sounded more interesting. Now having read it I do plan to go back and read the first one.

This book deals with the dark web and the on goings there. It's something we all know about, but this book brings it to life and makes you wonder if something like this could happen to you. It evokes both thoughts and emotions which in my opinion every good book should do.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great mystery, a fast paced read, or a book that keeps you awake at night with chilling 'what-if' questions.
“You can try to reason all you like about death and how it comes to be. I’ve seen so much death. I’ve sought justice for those who have been murdered, yet there still is no real justice for my brother. There is still no justice for me.”

Detective Jasmine Steele has an obsession with death trying to connect the dots believing that somehow every case that comes across her path is connected to Officer Garrison. It doesn’t matter; he is dead since she is sure there is more. In her basement a wall stands as she strings the lines to connect the dots determined to solve the death of her brother and all who may be involved in shooting her. Her girlfriend, friend and therapist Frankie is afraid she’s losing her again determined to hang on to raise Jazz’s brother’s son Chase hoping for children of their own and their future. Jazz has more than an obsession as revenge plays on her mind.

Fast-paced, exciting and powerful storyline, I just couldn’t put it down. I have always loved murder mysteries and Amato doesn’t disappoint. I was captivated by Jazz’s drive and determination to solve the current murder of Kaley and her family, a young girl who was being raped by her father all the while continuing to fuel her drive as she follows the evidence of her obsession addiction. This is one story not to be missed as Amato is an excellent storyteller and clearly has a hit in book two of “The Detective Jasmine Steele Series”. Perfect for anyone loving suspense, mystery and murder I can’t wait for more.
